Mothers2Mothers to Exit Malawi by December 31

After working in the country for many years, Mothers2Mothers organization has announced its exit in the country by 31 this month, citing shifts in global aid priorities and funding uncertainties as the main reasons.

The organization, which has been heavily involved in efforts to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV, stated in its farewell message that it is confident the long-standing collaboration with the Ministry of Health has made a meaningful impact.

It has, however, expressed optimism that it could re-establish operations in the country should funding opportunities improve in the future.

"Despite the closure, m2m remains hopefull that future finding opportunities may create a pathway to re-establish operations in Malawi" the statement reads in part.

Meanwhile, self-motherhood advocate Dr. Dorothy Ngoma has commended the work carried out by Mothers2mothers over the years.

Ngoma has challenged the government, through the Ministry of Health, to find sustainable ways of continuing the programs and services provided by the organization.

"We may not have much money as a country, but we have people who have been trained for years in this field. Let us make use of those people so that the programs should continue" Ngoma said

The development comes at a time when several organizations have been suspending or scaling down their programs in the country due to funding cuts.
