MHRC Flags Serious Gaps in Human-Rights Protection

The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has identified persistent gaps in the protection of human rights, including reports of torture in prisons, limited access to justice, employment discrimination against persons with disabilities, climate-change-induced food insecurity, restricted livelihood opportunities, and inadequate access to healthcare.

Speaking at a press briefing held at Sunbird Mzuzu Hotel, Commissioner Boniface Massah stressed the urgent need for coordinated action to address these challenges, which continue to undermine the socio-economic rights of many Malawians.

“We have mainstreamed the needs-based and human-rights approach to address the gaps that have been identified,” Massah said.

Meanwhile, the Commission has announced that this year’s commemoration of World Human Rights Day will take place on 10 December in Nkhata Bay under the theme “Human Rights: Our Everyday Essentials.”
