Chief Kapichi Calls for Completion of the Thyolo-Khonjeni Road

Traditional Authority Kapichi of Thyolo has urged government to ensure adequate funds are available for the completion of the Thyolo-Khonjeni road.

His remarks follow the Roads Authority’s announcement that funds for the project have been allocated in the 2026/2027 national budget, and that bids have been invited for consultancy and engineering services.

Chief Kapichi expressed optimism that the road will finally be completed this time, citing its importance to the people of the area, particularly farmers.

"I do believe that this time around funds are available and the government will complete the project. This is because we have been waiting for this road as it will help our farmers to travel smoothly to Thyolo boma and Blantyre to sell their produce," he said.

The Roads Authority has advertised four consultancy assignments. These include feasibility studies and detailed designs for the upgrading of the Thyolo – Khonjeni – Mulanje (T420) Road, periodic maintenance of the Mangochi – Monkey Bay (M10/S128) Road and the Salima (Kaphatenga) – Balaka Market Section of the M005 Road, as well as design review and construction supervision of Katete Bridge.

Parliamentarian for Thyolo-Khonjeni-Mangunda, Hastings Kajomba, described the development as long overdue.

"Honestly, it is a big development that we all have been waiting for. It will ease transport problems for our produce. Above all it will help patients to easily get to Thyolo District Hospital," he said.

"The government of Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika does not fail. The government through Roads Authority has the funds ready for the project. The people of Thyolo-Khonjeni-Mangunda Constituency are so happy," he added.

The construction of the Thyolo-Khonjeni road stalled in 2019 after only five kilometers had been completed under the Agricultural Sector Wide Approach (ASWAP 2).
