The Commissioner of Police for South East Region, Frank Kumukumu, has urged Station Commanders in the region to conduct thorough investigations and make arrests on all reported cases to reduce and end crime.
Kumukumu expressed concern over the increase in homicide cases where suspects are not arrested and cases are not followed up. He cited mob justice and violent acts against the elderly on witchcraft accusations as areas of particular concern.
He made the remarks during a virtual meeting with Station Commanders and other senior officers.
"The region has reported more cases on murder, mob justice and violent acts against the elderly on witchcraft accusations. We have to act swiftly to redress the situation because all eyes are on us as law enforcers," he said.
The Commissioner emphasized that arresting suspects and following due process would deter other would-be offenders and bring sanity to communities.
The Commissioner further urged station management to support investigators and other branches to fight crime.
Kumukumu also called for intensified patrols to make police more visible and reduce criminal activities during the Easter holiday and beyond. He advised stations to set up intelligence-driven roadblocks and traffic checkpoints.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mrs Joyce Mazalo, backed the call, urging Station Commanders to take the message seriously and implement the plans.
She also advised commanders to inspect roadblocks to ensure proper record-keeping and hygiene.
