As the September 16 parliamentary elections draw closer, three candidates vying for the Mangunda-Khonjeni seat in Thyolo have pledged to address the social and economic challenges facing the area.
The three made the pledges on Monday during a parliamentary debate at Khonjeni Youth Center Ground, organized in collaboration with the Chipembere Community Development Organization (CCDO).
Fungai Chiwaya, who is contesting on the People’s Development Party (PDP) ticket, said he intends to empower young people with practical skills to reduce unemployment.
“Once elected, I will ensure that learners start acquiring technical skills as early as Standard Seven so that they can be job creators rather than job seekers,” said Chiwaya.
He further promised to lobby for the recall of fertilizer coupons, arguing that the current electronic redemption system has created irregularities.
“The coupon system worked better for our farmers. We need to revisit that approach so that no one is left behind when it comes to farm inputs,” he added.
Independent candidate Hastings Kajomba highlighted ongoing development work he has already initiated.
“I have implemented several projects including electricity connections in villages, construction of school blocks and toilets, drilling of boreholes, food distribution, and even paying university fees for needy students,” Kajomba said.
He pledged to do more if re-elected:
“My priority is to construct roads, police units and additional school infrastructure to transform the constituency.”
Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate Jeannette Chikoko said her focus is on improving access to social services, especially for women and young people.
“I have supported education by paying school fees and constructed bridges for easy access. Going forward, I will upgrade Mangunda and Khonjeni health centers, provide business capital, and continue fighting for the girl child,” she said.
Meanwhile, the National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Trust Thyolo District has reiterated its call for all registered voters to participate in the upcoming polls.
“We want every registered voter to turn up and vote on September 16 so that communities can choose developmental leadership,” Kaunda stressed.
He further explained: "Voters who have misplaced their certificates should not worry — they can be assisted at their registration centers."
On his part, CCDO Executive Director Dalitso Chiwayula challenged young people to actively take part in the elections.
“The youth constitute the majority of the population, and their involvement is central in shaping the country’s future. They should not shy away from the ballot,” Chiwayula emphasized.
Adding his voice, Martin Kavalo, Chairperson of the Thyolo District Peace and Unity Committee, urged people to embrace harmony throughout the electoral process.
