The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) will this weekend host a two-day Cultural Festival and Research Seminar at its Thyolo campus under the theme: “Igniting Scientific Innovation, Preserving Cultural Heritage towards achieving Malawi 2063.”
The event, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, August 22–23, 2025, will combine academic research presentations with vibrant cultural celebrations.
Dr. Atikonda Mtenje Mkochi, Dean of the Bingu School of Culture and Heritage, said the first day will be dedicated to a research conference.
“We expect scholars and postgraduate students to present their papers, sparking discussions that will connect research with Malawi’s development aspirations,” Dr. Mkochi told journalists.
She added that the second day will transform into a full cultural festival, made possible through K40 million support from Standard Bank.
“The festival will feature live music, art exhibitions, traditional foods, family activities and displays of local innovations. It is a celebration of who we are, and a reminder that culture and innovation must go hand in hand for national progress,” she explained.
Businessman and philanthropist Napoleon Dzombe will deliver the keynote address. According to Dr. Mkochi, his presence will add home-grown inspiration to the event.
She added "We believe his story, achievements and experience will motivate students to value their heritage while pursuing innovation and enterprise.”
This year's cultural festival aims to create an inclusive and memorable experience, a space where everyone can learn, celebrate, and share diverse cultural expressions."
The event is free of charge and open to students, staff, and members of the public, according to Dr. Mkochi.
