Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Sidik Mia, has been invited by King Charles III to speak at the Ministerial Water Forum next week, where she will highlight Malawi’s progress in ensuring access to potable water for all citizens.
Mia said the invitation comes as Malawi continues to make notable strides in the water sector, guided by the country’s development blueprint, Malawi 2063, alongside policy reforms and the establishment of the National Water Resources Authority.
Water Witness International Chief Executive Officer, Nick Hepworth, praised Malawi’s initiatives, including the establishment of key water management structures. However, he emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between the government, private sector, and civil society to bridge the gap between policy and funding to ensure water security.
“Malawi’s invitation to Buckingham Palace underscores its growing influence in global water governance and climate resilience, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable water management and universal access to safe water,” Hepworth said.
The recognition highlights Malawi’s dedication to water security as a crucial factor in its pursuit of socio-economic development and environmental sustainability.
The discussions took place at a two-day multi-stakeholder Leadership Forum on Water Security at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.
The event has brought together government officials, civil society representatives, the academia and scientists to stimulate investment and action for water security and climate resilience.
