Political and governance analysts have expressed mixed reactions to President Peter Mutharika’s recent government appointments, raising concerns about gender representation and the slow formation of a full cabinet.
On Monday evening, President Mutharika announced several key appointments, including lawyer Frank Mbeta as Attorney General, Gertrude Huwa, SC, as Solicitor General, Festino Maele as Director of Public Prosecutions and Cathy Maulidi as Press Secretary.
Henry Mukhuna has been as Advisor on Manifesto Implementation, and Apostle Timothy Khoviwa as Advisor on Religious Affairs.
While these appointments fill critical government positions, analysts argue they fall short in addressing gender balance and the broader need for a fully constituted cabinet.
Political analyst Yamikani Chitete expressed concern over the limited number of women among the appointees. “The appointments are a step forward, but the gender imbalance is worrying,” Chitete said, emphasizing that the government must comply with the Gender Equality Act.
“Where the president has discretion, there is an expectation for gender-sensitive appointments,” she added.
Governance expert Chimwemwe Tsitsi offered a complementary perspective. While commending the President for appointing capable individuals, Tsitsi warned that delays in naming a full cabinet could hinder government operations.
“The continued delay in naming a full cabinet could negatively affect decision-making and overall government efficiency,” Tsitsi noted.
The observations come amid growing public debate over President Mutharika’s leadership, with citizens and civil society groups calling for greater transparency and adherence to gender equality laws in government appointments.
Many are urging the administration to expedite the formation of a full cabinet.
