The Super League of Malawi (SULOM) has called off the midweek TNM Super League fixture between Mighty Wanderers FC and Ekhaya FC, following a request from the Nomads to have the match rescheduled.
Originally slated for Thursday this week, the match will now be played next week on a date to be confirmed, according to SULOM.
Wanderers made the request citing the unavailability of three key players — Emmanuel Nyirenda, Wisdom Mpinganjira and Blessings Singini — who were part of the Malawi National Team (the Flames) squad that recently returned from Tunisia after international duty.
Wanderers Chief Executive Officer Panganeni Ndovi confirmed the development, saying the club has received official communication from SULOM.
“Yes, we have been informed by SULOM that our game against Ekhaya FC will not take place this Thursday as initially scheduled,” said Ndovi. “This gives us ample time to prepare our players and ensure they recover fully after a long international assignment.”
Ndovi added that the postponement comes at a crucial time as the Nomads are also preparing for a tough FDH Bank Cup quarterfinal clash against Creck Sporting Club in the Central Region this coming weekend.
“We appreciate SULOM’s understanding. This allows us to focus on the FDH Bank Cup quarterfinal over the weekend before returning to league action next week,” he added.
Confirming the decision, SULOM Vice General Secretary Donnex Chilonga said the league body found Wanderers’ request reasonable and in line with fair competition principles.
“The reasons presented by Mighty Wanderers were valid, especially considering the players’ involvement with the national team and the need for adequate recovery time,” said Chilonga. “As such, we agreed to move the fixture to a later date next week.”
The rescheduling means Wanderers will now have a short break before resuming their league campaign, while Ekhaya FC will await confirmation of the new match date.
