Kasungu Municipal Council says it will, from April 2026, stop renewing business premises licences for investors who do not have proper waste management facilities such as waste bins.
Council spokesperson Blessings Nyasulu said poor waste management has contributed to unclean conditions in most parts of the town.
He said the council has launched a campaign to ensure every business premises has a waste bin to improve sanitation.
“We are concerned that people are disposing of waste carelessly. This is affecting our operations as we are forced to divert attention to managing the mess,” he said.
Nyasulu also urged the business community to take responsibility for public infrastructure developed by government ministries, departments, and agencies, including roads, drainage systems, and dumping sites.
Environmentalist Mathews Malata has welcomed the move but expressed concern over its implementation.
“This should have been enforced years ago when investors were setting up their businesses. It raises questions,” he said, while also urging councils to be proactive in addressing waste management challenges.
Recently, President Arthur Peter Mutharika directed that all public and private institutions must have proper waste management facilities.
