The Patriots International has said its countrywide medical equipment donation drive is a way of giving back to Malawi, noting that many of its members benefited from the country’s free university education.
Speaking at Malamulo Mission Hospital in Thyolo on Friday, National Chairperson for The Patriots, Honourable Kamuzu Chibambo, said the initiative is aimed at uplifting the country’s healthcare system.
“We want these materials to benefit the poor and help uplift healthcare in the community,” said Chibambo.
The medical equipment, valued at K2.5 billion, includes wheelchairs, mattresses, beds, and theatre equipment.
Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Austin Dice, expressed gratitude for the donation, saying it will greatly improve service delivery.
“This equipment will be fully utilized to improve patient care. We are very grateful for this gesture,” said Dice.
Thyolo District Commissioner, Hudson Kuphanga, also commended the donation, describing it as complementary to government’s efforts to strengthen the health sector.
“This support aligns with our government’s goal of improving healthcare services, especially in rural areas,” said Kuphanga.
Senior Chief Khwethemule, who represented the local community, appealed to hospital authorities to ensure fair treatment of patients.
“Since this equipment was donated freely, we urge the hospital to avoid charging patients heavily so that everyone can benefit,” said Khwethemule.
The Patriots International has promised to continue similar donations across the country, with 100 consignments expected in.
