The Malawi Peace and Unity Commission says it intends to meet with presidents of various political parties to strategize on peace-building ahead of the 2025 general elections.
The commission’s chairperson, Bishop Mary Nkosi, told Zodiak Online that the continued pockets of political violence, with less than a year before the next polls, require top leadership intervention now.
“Political violence has no room in the country’s political landscape. There is a need to find lasting solutions to end the problem, and the only way is to meet party presidents to condemn the same,” said Bishop Nkosi.
She disclosed that before meeting the political party presidents, they will first engage with their secretary generals to book the appointments. She emphasized that this is the only way to ensure a violence-free campaign ahead of next year’s polls.
However, political analyst Vincent Rangel doubts the impact of such meetings in ending political violence, which is becoming a norm among party followers.
“While we appreciate the engagements in ending the vice, such political violence is becoming a norm whenever the country is preparing for general elections,” said Rangel.
