Teachers Union Backs Parliamentary Probe on Amarylls Hotel Deal

Druwen Moyo; our demand for resignation of the board still stands

The Secondary School Teachers Union (SESTU) has commended Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) for what it has described as a professional investigation into the controversial purchase of Amarylls Hotel.

In a statement released on Friday, March 13, 2026, the union said the committee is doing a commendable job and expressed hope that the truth will emerge once the probe is concluded.

The statement, signed by SESTU General Secretary Druwen Frank Moyo, also expressed the union’s full support for a comprehensive report issued by the Malawi Law Society (MLS) regarding the purchase of the hotel by the Public Service Pension Trust Fund (PSPTF).

“As SESTU, we are keenly following the matter and with more revelations emerging, SESTU and other stakeholders who questioned the purchase of Amarylls Hotel at the exorbitant price of K128.7 billion will be vindicated,” said Moyo.

The union has also praised the Director of Financial Institutions at the Reserve Bank of Malawi for ordering the reversal of the hotel purchase.

Moyo said SESTU’s demand for the resignation of the PSPTF Board still stands. He warned that union members will hold a vigil at PSPTF offices if the board fails to step down after a three-week ultimatum that expires on March 18, 2026.

He has since called on all public servants’ unions to unite and fight for justice in the matter.

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts says it expects to conclude the probe next week.
