Songwe Still Searching for First Win After 18 Games

Songwe Border United’s hopes of surviving in the TNM Super League are hanging by a thread after yet another defeat, this time a narrow 1-0 loss to neighbours Karonga United at Karonga Stadium on Sunday.

The setback means Songwe are still winless after 18 matches this season, having conceded a staggering 47 goals — the worst defensive record in the league so far. Their struggles have left them firmly rooted at the bottom of the table and the threat of relegation is becoming more of a reality with each passing week.

Head coach Christopher Nyambose admitted the situation is dire, stressing the urgent need for his side to turn things around.

“We have to start collecting points, otherwise our chances of surviving are very slim,” Nyambose said after the match.
“The boys are giving their all, but lapses in concentration continue to cost us. We cannot afford to keep dropping points at this stage of the season.”

Karonga United, on the other hand, moved further up the table with the victory, keeping alive their hopes of pushing into the mid-table pack. Their coach Oscar Kaunda praised his players for grinding out the result despite the intensity of the local derby.

“It was a very tough game. Songwe gave us problems, especially in the second half,” Kaunda admitted.
“But at the end of the day, what matters most is getting the three points. We are happy with the win and we will keep working hard to build momentum.”

The loss piles more pressure on Songwe Border United, who now face a do-or-die run of fixtures if they are to avoid dropping out of Malawi’s top flight.

With 12 matches left to play, Nyambose’s charges must not only find their first win of the season but also string together consistent performances to close the gap on the teams above them.
